Debuting tomorrow, August 16, LACMA's Bing Theater will become the sole authorized and official venue for Loris Gréaud: Sculpt, a unique, genre-defying movie event that asks us to rethink the nature of cinema and performance. This is Gréaud's first major exhibition on the United States's west coast.
Taking a cue from what the artist terms "social science fiction," Sculpt traces the innermost thoughts of one man as he meditates on the nature of beauty, desire, and obsession in a bleak, dystopian world. Augmented with haunting performances by Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Rampling, and Michael Lonsdale and an original soundtrack by American art collective The Residents, Gréaud raises important new questions about imagination, authorship, and alienation within the absurdist strictures of the modern marketplace. In fact, these themes shape the viewing experience as much as the film's content. For this event, the Bing Theater will be reconfigured for one audience member at a time, turning each screening into a completely immersive and solitary experience.
Sculpt will be screened daily. All screenings are free and tickets will be released in the morning on the day of each performance on site.
