Call for Artist Proposals

The Art + Technology Lab at LACMA is once again accepting proposals from artists for experimental projects with awards up to $50,000 plus in-kind support from the museum and private partners in technology and science.

Proposals are due February 22, 2017, and awards will be announced in April 2017. Awards are given for a period of one year, and during that time the artist is encouraged to pursue new directions in their work that explore ideas in technology and culture.

Since the inception of the program, which is presented by Hyundai and made possible by partners including Google, SpaceX, and Accenture, we have awarded grants to 16 artists who have developed projects that engage big data, satellite technology, performance, social media and the afterlife, and more. Many of those artists have gone on to receive other major grants, academic appointments, residencies, and exhibitions as a result of work that was born in the Art + Technology program here at the museum.

"The LACMA Art + Technology Award not only provided key material support to complete my project, but also invaluable advice and guidance from advisors, including museum staff and curators," says Michael Mandiberg, an artist from New York whose work is exploring questions related to technology and labor. "That has shaped the project into something different and better."

"The Art + Technology Lab is a research and development space for artists here at the museum," said LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director Michael Govan. "It's part of a long history, which began with the inception of the museum, of inviting artists to try new things in full view of the public."

Preference is given to projects that are speculative in nature and provide opportunities for public engagement, through crowd-sourcing, talks, demonstrations, maker events, or performance.
