Behind the Scenes: LACMA Bake-Off

October 31, 2018
Devi Noor, Curatorial Assistant, American Art

For the past 10 years, the American Art department has sponsored a bake-off. It’s a little-known tradition, but each year LACMA staff have presented some of the most creative and delicious entries. Winners are awarded bragging rights for the entire year for the following categories: Best Tasting; Best Decorated; LACMA’s Choice (anything related to a work in LACMA’s collection or exhibition); and an unspecified theme that changes each year. This year’s bake-off happened to be in October, and the theme was Halloween/Día de los Muertos. In honor of its 10th anniversary, we are excited to share a selection of recent and past winners:

2015's Best Decorated and Best "Green" Theme: Ode to ODTR (Dome of the Rock) by Courtney Lesoon, Art of the Middle East (vegan and gluten-free cake)

2014's Best "Movie" Theme: Yellow Brick Road Lemon Bars by Madison Eady, Development

2013's Best Tasting: Strawberry Margarita Cupcakes by Debra McManus, Art Administration and Collections

2012's Best "Surrealist" Theme: Exquisite Corpse by Jeanne Dreskin, Rights & Reproductions

2010's Best Decorated: Eakins Beef Cake (with cheese and prosciutto topping in honor of Manly Pursuits: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins) by Aaron Ziolkowski, Collections Information

2008's Best Decorated: Chocolate Cabbage Cake by Amy McFarland, Graphics

Here's to many more years of creativity and deliciousness!
