This spring, LACMA presents the West Coast premiere of Charles White: A Retrospective (through June 9, 2019), the first major exhibition of the artist Charles White (1918–1979) in over 30 years. A concurrent and complementary exhibition, Life Model: Charles White and His Students (through September 15, 2019) is on view at LACMA’s satellite gallery at Charles White Elementary School, formerly Otis Art Institute.

A Free Limited-Edition Charles White TAP Card

LACMA has partnered with Metro to produce a limited-edition TAP Card featuring “I Have a Dream,” one of the artworks currently on view in Charles White: A Retrospective. Celebrate Charles White’s 101st birthday on Tuesday, April 2, by joining artist and Charles White’s son, C. Ian White and artist Richard Wyatt, Jr. for a walkthrough of Charles White: A Retrospective at 6:30 pm. Reservations for this event are no longer available in advance but a standby line will form at 6 pm outside the Resnick Pavilion on the day of this event.

Inspired by the exhibition, four-time Grammy Award nominee Gerald Clayton and his quintet will perform a special concert on Saturday, April 6, at 7:30 pm in LACMA’s Bing Theater, presenting the program "White Cities," paying tribute to Charles White and the life he lived, along with the cities that shaped his historic career. On Sunday, April 7, at 1 pm Dr. LeRonn P. Brooks, assistant professor in the Department of Africana Studies at Lehman College of CUNY and a curator for The Racial Imaginary Institute, will explore how artists Charles White and Gordon Parks informed each other's practice. Both White and Parks came of age in Chicago during the city’s Black Renaissance, and both were interested in documenting the life of people and the human condition. Free and open to the public.
