Margaret Kraus recently completed her internship at LACMA’s Conservation Center, and provided us with some reflections on her experiences in the program in the form of a hand-illustrated comic for a behind-the-scenes look at the museum.
LACMA’s Conservation Center houses a robust team of cultural heritage professionals, including scientists, photographers, and art conservators. As a science intern, I had the opportunity to observe the conservation team at work each day, giving me an inside look at how to care for and preserve the art we see in museums. As a recent graduate from Scripps College interested in a career in the museum world, I have loved learning what goes on behind the scenes at the Conservation Center. The mentorship I received during my internship inspired me to illustrate this comic series to capture and share the relationships I’ve made and the cool things I’ve learned. My comics highlight individuals from the conservation team and the fascinating projects they work on, so whether you’re interested in a career in conservation, photography, or science, or are just curious to learn more about conservation at LACMA, these comics are for you! I hope my experiences will be a source of inspiration for you as they have been for me.
