Vincent Valdez and Ry Cooder: El Chavez Ravine features Valdez’s oil painting on a 1953 Good Humor ice cream truck portraying the forced removal of a predominantly Mexican American community for the construction of Dodger Stadium. The work is a monument to a disturbing chapter in L.A. history and symbolizes struggles across the country about affordable housing, eminent domain, gentrification, and discrimination.
Inspired by the work on view, families can engage with the exhibition at Pop Up Art Workshop: California Cruising on Friday, June 21. When you visit the museum, drop by El Chavez Ravine between 11 am–5 pm for a workshop that will let visitors of all ages reflect on personally significant cultural symbols or historical events and use a 1964 Chevrolet Impala template to create your own artwork.
Families can also head to the Levitt Pavilion and LACMA Summer Art Hop on Saturday, June 22, presented alongside Dining with the Sultan at Charles White Elementary School, to enjoy drop-in, hands-on art-making activities, music, and refreshments at Charles White Elementary School and MacArthur Park.
