Andell Family Sundays—Meet Magdalena Suarez Frimkess

September 10, 2024
Rosanne Kleinerman, Teaching Artist

This month Andell Family Sundays is focused on Magdalena Suarez Frimkess: The Finest Disregard, with a workshop inspired by the exhibition.

If you can, start your time at LACMA by visiting the exhibition in the Resnick Pavilion. Suarez Frimkess was born in Venezuela, moved to Venice, California, in 1971, and spent her life making art. Now, at 95 years old, she has her first solo museum show at LACMA! Come see her magical painted clay sculptures, tableware, tiles, and more. She famously paints and sculpts cartoon characters like Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Wonder Woman, and Betty Boop. You will have a ball exploring this exhibition and discovering the enchanting details in her artwork.

Pick up a scavenger hunt worksheet that will guide you through the exhibition, and get some stickers for participating!

Are you ready to make your own art? Head outside to find the Andell Family Sundays workshop located behind the Resnick Pavilion, facing Levitated Mass, a.k.a. the giant boulder! These workshops are designed for all ages.

Inspired by Suarez Frimkess’ playful art, artist Eszter Delgado will help you make pinch pots and figurines out of air-dry clay. This clay does not need to be fired, and hardens as it dries. Eszter will show you how to build your sculpture, which you can decorate with rubber stamps and watercolor paints. We even have tools for you to use to add textures and designs. You can also look at photos of artworks in the exhibition so you can get some great ideas for your own work.

Wouldn’t it be great if you had a special box for your sculpture and other treasures? Artist Beatriz Jaramillo also has an activity inspired by the ceramic boxes that Suarez Frimkess makes. You’ll learn how to fold a box and use all kinds of supplies to decorate it: cut, fold, and glue beautiful patterned papers onto it, and don’t forget to draw or write on it with markers and colored pencils.

As always, our Fiber Makers Circle also takes place at Andell Family Sundays and is a great place to relax and work with things like yarn and fabric. You can learn embroidery and weaving or make a pom pom, or even bring your own project from home to work on with others.

Andell Family Sundays: Playful Pottery will take place at LACMA on September 15, 12:30–3:30 pm, and is free and open to all. Keep your eyes on our full calendar of programs for even more fun activities.
