Feeling harried during the holiday season? LACMA is pleased to offer multiple programs this month specifically designed to help you slow down and connect with works of art. Two of the programs will take place in Thomas Joshua Cooper: The World’s Edge, an exhibition ideally suited for contemplation and reflection, surrounded by Cooper’s stunning, large-scale, black-and-white photographs that encapsulate the psychological impact of each location through geographic and atmospheric details. The third program takes place in Betye Saar: Call and Response, which looks at the relationship between Saar’s preliminary sketches in small sketchbooks and her finished assemblage works that consistently address issues of race, gender, and spirituality. All programs are free, reservations required.
This coming Monday, December 9, at 4 pm, Mindful Monday: Cultivating Empathy and Connectedness provides an opportunity for visitors to spend quality time with works of art to become more grounded, connected—both with themselves and with others—and to grow their capacity for empathy. Visitors who have participated in this program have shared how much one can see and feel when taking the time to slow down and look carefully. Works of art can unfold over time, and continue to nourish viewers after leaving the gallery.
As we near the winter solstice, LACMA’s quarterly Meditation & Art program will be held on Thursday, December 19, at 4 pm. Bask in Cooper’s landscapes while learning traditional mediation and setting intentions for the coming year.
If you have someone in your family with early-stage dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, on Tuesday, December 17, at 1 pm, LACMA’s program Personal Connections provides participants and their family members or caregivers an opportunity to discuss works through facilitated conversations.
All programs provide the opportunity to create meaningful connections with works of art on view in LACMA’s galleries.
Thomas Joshua Cooper: The World’s Edge is on view in the Resnick Pavilion through February 2, 2020 and Betye Saar: Call and Response is on view in the Resnick Pavilion through April 5, 2020.
