Find your way to the museum this weekend and take in the beginning of autumn. Friday night, Kathleen Grace takes center stage at Jazz at LACMA at 6 pm. Employing vocal harmonies, grooves, and textures, Grace fuses jazz melodies with the tradition of storytelling in American folk music. For those looking to get spook, the last double-feature from Let There Be Fright: William Castle Scare Classics film series presents Strait-Jacket at 7:30 pm and Homicidal at 9:15 pm. One ticket gets you into both Strait-Jacket, the tale of an ax murderer trying to restart his life, and Homicidal, in which Castle taps into his inner Alfred Hitchcock for this psychological thriller.
Saturday, Korea Day at LACMA celebrates the art and culture of Korea and the final days of the exhibition Treasure of Korea (closing on Sunday) with a full day of FREE, special events. At 11 am Yi Song-Mi, art history professor at the Academy of Korean Studies, discusses the significance, symbolism and function of palace screen paintings from the Joseon dynasty. At noon, join the full-length walkthrough of the exhibition. Later, at 1 pm, enjoy an afternoon with the Ahn Sook Sun Ensemble, performing a special selection of traditional Korean music in the Bing Theater. Reserve your free tickets in advance. Then be a part of a Korean tea ceremony at 3 pm, hosted by the director of the Myungwon Cultural Foundation, dedicated to preserving traditional Korean culture. All the while, in the LA Times Central Court, see the debut of our community bojagi (a textile sewn from fabric scraps), measuring nearly 16 feet square. End the day with two films from director George Stevens, known for having an eye for composition and his ease with actors, with Laddie and A Place in the Sun, beginning at 5 pm.
Finally, on Sunday, bring the family out to Andell Family Sundays for a look at the art of textiles, starting at 12:30 pm. At 4 pm Don Bachardy, American portrait artist, stops by Art Catalogues for a casual Q&A. Then Sundays Live welcomes back the Capitol Ensemble at 6 pm. Don’t forget, throughout the weekend free, docent-led tours highlight heavy hitters like Rembrandt and Hals on Saturday at 2:30 pm, the art of 20th-century Latin American at 3 pm, and the sculptures of Rodin at 1 pm on Sunday.
