LACMA is burning up this summer! This weekend we have a ton of exciting performances, programs, exhibitions, and activities that everyone can enjoy! On Friday, June 28 at 6 pm, Jazz at LACMA continues strong with a sensational performance by Andrea Miller, who's been headlining at festivals and leading jazz clubs across the country. Then at 7 pm, sign-up for a free Art+Tech walking tour of La Brea Tar Pits and 2017 Art + Technology Lab grant recipient Carl Cheng’s Tar Pool Project. During the tour, Carl Cheng and Dr. Emily Lindsey, Assistant Curator at the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, will discuss the role asphalt plays in their respective work and in the changing environment and technological landscape. At 7:30 pm, don't miss a screening of MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A., a startlingly personal profile of the critically acclaimed artist, chronicling her remarkable journey from refugee immigrant to pop star. In conjunction with The Jeweled Isle: Art from Sri Lanka, the film provides unparalleled, intimate access to the artist in her battles with the music industry and mainstream media as her success and fame explodes, becoming one of the most recognizable, outspoken, and provocative voices in music today.
On Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm, guests with museum admission can enjoy the special presentation of On View: Selections from Recent Acquisitions in Memory of Greg Escalante. The viewing will highlight works from a large group of recent acquisitions made in memory of the collector, gallerist, curator, and co-founder of Juxtapoz magazine who was the epicenter of a vibrant, iconoclastic community around what came to be known as Lowbrow or Pop Surrealist art. Also happening on Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm, get your own hand-painted custom paper signs by the talented artist She Chimp at the LACMA Store, first come, first served.
On Saturday at 5 pm, dance the night away with saxophonist and composer, Justo Almario at Latin Sounds! Almario has been fusing Latin, Afro-Cuban, South American, Funk, and Jazz genres for over 35 years, working with such legendary artists as Mongo Santamaria, Freddie Hubbard, Cal Tjader, and Jennifer Lopez.
If you're looking for a fun, free, and engaging activity for the little ones in your life, bring them to Story Time in the Galleries on Friday, June 28 at 2 pm. And on Sunday, June 30 from 11 am to 12 pm, stop by for a special edition of Story Time in the Galleries in conjunction with Drag Queen Story Hour, where the fabulous drag queen Pickle will take you on a reading journey into a world of folk tales and colors.
