Visit our neck of the woods this weekend and view our newest installation Mineo Mizuno: Harmony, opening this Saturday, August 10. Inspired by the idyllic forest of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, artist Mineo Mizuno's latest body of work includes interventions across the property of Fort Mountain Ranch where he lives, using ceramics, fallen trees, and manzanita shrubs removed to avert fires. For Harmony, he transplants elements of this immersive environment to Los Angeles. Tea House is his interpretation of the traditional Japanese structure, with an open, organic form that balances the seclusion needed to experience the tea ceremony with the powerful presence of the natural surroundings.
Also, don't miss two must-see exhibitions, Power of Pattern: Central Asian Ikats from the David and Elizabeth Reisbord Collection and Isaac Julien: Playtime, both closing this Sunday, August 11. Power of Pattern showcases over 60 examples of Central Asian ikat robes and panels with textile patterns comprising blurred, cloud-like juxtapositions of color, influenced by the various cultures that traveled through or settled along the historic Silk Road. Adjacent to this exhibition is Isaac Julien's captivating multi-channel film installation Playtime (2014), starring James Franco, Maggie Cheung, Colin Salmon, and auctioneer Simon de Pury, among others. Playtime is a critique of the influence of capital in the art world, demonstrating the various levels at which the flow of money has an affect on the production, dealing, and collecting of contemporary art, and the lives impacted by the system.
