Visit our three newest exhibitions—Every Living Thing: Animals in Japanese Art, Thomas Joshua Cooper: The World’s Edge, and Betye Saar: Call and Response opening this Sunday, September 22, with exclusive Member Previews through Saturday, September 21. Every Living Thing celebrates one of the most distinctive and compelling aspects of Japanese art: the depiction of animals. Explore themes such as Zodiac Animals, Animals from Nature, Religion, Myth and Folklore, and Leisure in a myriad of works from ancient 6th-century clay sculpture to contemporary art. Also visit The World's Edge, an exhibition comprising 65 stunning, large-scale, black-and-white photographs that encapsulate the psychological impact of each location through geographic and atmospheric details. Delve deeper into the practice of revered artist Betye Saar in Call and Response which covers the arc of Saar’s career and looks at the relationship between her sketches in small sketchbooks and related finished works. The exhibition will include pieces from her early years up through a new sculptural installation.
On Friday, September 20 at 6 pm, celebrate John Coltrane’s 93rd birthday this weekend at Jazz at LACMA as saxophonist, composer, and educator Teodross Avery revisits Coltrane’s repertoire.
