Make sure to visit The Allure of Matter: Material Art from China, closing this Sunday, January 5. This exhibition showcases Chinese contemporary artists who have cultivated intimate relationships with their materials, establishing a framework of interpretation revolving around materiality since the 1980s. Their media range from the commonplace to the unconventional, the natural to the synthetic, the elemental to the composite: from plastic, water, and wood, to hair, tobacco, and Coca-Cola. Bringing together works from the past four decades in which conscious material choice has become a symbol of the artists’ expression, The Allure of Matter includes work by Ai Weiwei, Xu Bing, Cai Guo-Qiang, Lin Tianmiao, Song Dong, Yin Xiuzhen, Zhan Wang, Zhang Huan, and more. As a special treat, stop by on Sunday, January 5 at 5:30 pm for In Conversation: Stephen Little and gu wenda, where Stephen Little, Florence and Harry Sloan Curator of Chinese Art and Department Head, Chinese, Korean, and South and Southeast Asian Art, speaks with internationally renowned artist gu wenda about his work united nations: american code featured in the exhibition.
