This weekend at LACMA we welcome you to explore and learn about two spectacular outdoor installations, Mineo Mizuno: Harmony and Kirsten Mosher: Soul Mate 180°, closing on Sunday, February 23 and Tuesday, February 25, respectively. Inspired by the idyllic forest of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, artist Mineo Mizuno transplanted elements of the immersive environment to Los Angeles. Tea House is his interpretation of the traditional Japanese structure, with an open, organic form that balances the seclusion needed to experience the tea ceremony with the powerful presence of the natural surroundings. For more insights on this installation, join a docent tour on Friday, February 21 at 1 pm, free with museum admission.
Soul Mate 180° represents the culmination of Kirsten Mosher’s Art + Technology Lab project. Through the use of satellite imagery to discover what lies on the opposite side of the earth, Mosher explored the tension between what can be seen and what is imagined. Ultimately, Mosher discovered LACMA’s antipode to be a point in the Indian Ocean, which inspired a sculpture that depicts a wave in the Indian Ocean currently on view in the garden outside of BCAM, Level 1. The second element in the installation is a short story displayed on a beam outside BCAM, Level 2.
