This weekend at LACMA be here for the opening of Larry Sultan: Here and Home, the first retrospective on the California photographer. Containing over 200 photographs, the exhibition highlights Sultan’s collaborate work from the 1970s to his solo efforts in the following decades. Members see it first during Member Previews on Friday and Saturday.
Friday night, enjoy the vocal talents of Mr. Z at Jazz at LACMA at 6 pm. Shortly thereafter, our latest film series, After Expressionism: The Versatile Edgar G. Ulmer, presents Detour at 7:30 pm and The Strange Woman at 8:50 pm. The series surveys films from the production designer turned director, who’s best known for the 1934 horror flick The Black Cat.
Saturday at noon, take a guided walk-through of African Cosmos: Stellar Arts with two professors from UCLA versed in African artistry. On this special tour (free with general admission), Dr. Allen F. Roberts and Dr. Pollly Nooter Roberts explore how contemplation of heavenly bodies has inspired artists across generations. Discover more with our daily, docent-led tours of the collection, including a 20 minute look at Decades of Abstraction in Latin America and a full-length tour of South and Southeast Asian Art. At 7 pm After Dark: Teen Night takes over the campus; reservations are sold out but a standby line will form for last minute admission.
Take some time for you and your family at Andell Family Sundays on Sunday at 12:30 pm, continuing their exploration of Edward Biberman, Abbot Kinney and the Story of Venice and The Painted City: Art from Teotihuacan. At 2 pm join Luke Roberts, professor of Japanese history at UCSB, at Samurai Life During the Edo Period as he speaks on the times and life of the samurai between the 17th and 19th centuries. Put a bow on a great weekend with classical music from violinist Mariusz Patyra and pianist Krzysztof Herdzin at 6 pm during Sundays Live.
