This Weekend at LACMA

Get the gang together for a trip to the museum this weekend. Friday, Jazz at LACMA presents the Otmaro Ruiz Quartet, led by the Venezuelan keyboardist, on the outdoor stage at 6 pm. Every Friday night LACMA is open until 8 pm—a perfect opportunity to see two recent exhibitions, Ed Moses: Drawings from the 1960s and 70s and Various Small Fires (Working Documents). The former features all-over graphite drawings of roses and signature diagonal grids, the latter tells several forgotten stories from the museum’s 50-year history.

Chris Burden: Ode to Santos Dumont closes on Sunday. Paying tribute to the father of aviation in France, Ode offers a palpable expression of the density of air, gravity, and energy. See this kinetic sculpture in motion for 15-minute intervals at noon, 2 pm, 4 pm, and 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday. More live music happens at Latin Sounds at 5 pm, with Cecilia Noël, a Peruvian musician known for her explosive live shows. The show is free and takes place in Hancock Park, right behind the museum.

And there’s no better place to show dad you care than visiting LACMA this Father’s Day. Andell Family Sunday keeps LACMA’s 50th anniversary party going with a free workshop from 12:30 to 3:30 pm. Tours of the collection, like Art of East Asia at noon on Saturday and Sunday’s quick overview of Noah Purifoy: Junk Dada at 1 pm, really bring the museum to life. Sundays Live wraps things up with baritone Ryan de Ryke and pianist Daniel Schlosberg at 6 pm in the Bing Theater.
