Get down to the smooth sounds happening over by Urban Light. On Friday night, the Angel City Jazz Festival brings two of its most revered acts to LACMA. Both have significantly contributed to the evolution of jazz. The festival is presented by Angel City Arts, a non-profit organization committed to cultivating and revitalizing jazz culture in Los Angeles. Get here early for a seat or lay out some blankets on the lawn for an eclectic array of live music.
Don’t be alarmed if you see zombies traveling in packs around the museum on Saturday. They’re (hopefully) LACMA Local members who’ve just taken an “Intro to Zombie” workshop for Local: Zombie. On Saturday morning, Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre will guide Locals through the zombie transformation process. Want in on the fun? Join LACMA Local and enjoy art-focused events with the museum as your playground.
Also on Saturday, join art and design professionals for a full day dedicated to contemporary jewelry. Beyond Bling: Jewelry Matters is a symposium celebrating the opening of Beyond Bling: Jewelry from the Lois Boardman Collection. Dutch jeweler and industrial designer Gijs Bakker will deliver the keynote address. The symposium is free with reservations.
Beyond Bling explores the use of nontraditional materials and techniques, the ways jewelry can communicate personal or political messages, and the medium's potential to shock and delight. Make sure to stop by The Craft and Folk Art Museum (CAFAM) for the Beyond Bling Pop-Up Shop from 11 am–7 pm. Admission to the shop is free. CAFAM is located two blocks east of LACMA at 5814 Wilshire Boulevard.
To cap off the Beyond Bling fun, bring your kids to Andell Family Sundays to make your own whimsical jewelry in artist-led workshops. Then, check out a special interactive exhibition of art and jewelry by the San Diego State University Jewelry + Metalwork Program. Try on and take a selfie with these unique art wearables for the whole world to see!
