Trick or treat! This weekend at LACMA the only tricks we have in store for you are the mind-blowing illusions of three dimensions in 3D: Double Vision, on view through March 31, 2019, with a last chance to participate in fun 3D art-making activities at Andell Family Sundays—3D: Come See It! this Sunday, October 28, 2019 at 12:30 pm.
We do have plenty of treats to go around this weekend. The first is the debut of Rauschenberg: The 1/4 Mile and Merce Cunningham, Clouds and Screens, both opening on Sunday, October 28, with Member Previews through Saturday, October 27. Rauschenberg: The 1/4 Mile was created over a span of 17 years by pioneering artist Robert Rauschenberg and it will be exhibited in its entirety for the first time! The work, taking up the entire third floor of BCAM, comprises 190 panels that measure approximately a quarter mile in length and includes an eclectic array of mixed media, sculptural everyday objects throughout the exhibition space, materials from his travels, and ambient street sounds. The other immersive exhibition in our goody bag is Merce Cunningham, Clouds and Screens, an installation that exemplifies the collaborative energy of choreographer Merce Cunningham. The exhibition presents installations by Charles Atlas and Andy Warhol, along with video projections of Cunningham's early dances, all interwoven to reinstate Cunningham's belief that the elements of a dance—movement, music, costumes, and decor—could come together during the "common time" of a performance.
Another treat is a very special conversation on Friday, October 26 at 7:30 pm with acclaimed fashion designer Jason Wu with LACMA senior curator of costume and textiles Sharon Takeda, where they will discuss his creations, career, and current collaboration with Otis College of Art and Design and the MADWORKSHOP Foundation. Wu has garnered worldwide acclaim dressing the likes of Michelle Obama, Reese Witherspoon, Julianne Moore, Diane Kruger, Kerry Washington, and Christy Turlington, so don't miss your chance to learn more about his creative designs and career.
Then on Saturday, October 27, at 7:30 pm, Teen Night—Middle School is back for a night of dancing, exploring 3D: Double Vision, art workshops, and tacos! If you have a middle schooler in your life, make sure they bring their school ID and bring them to this great free event where they can meet other art-loving teens and learn more about the science and creative history of 3D. The event will be chaperoned by museum and security staff, so parents can make it a date night, drop off their teens, and enjoy a meal at Ray's Stark Bar.
On Sunday, October 28, from 4 to 6 pm, Art Catalogues will host an opening reception for STAYING IN SHAPE, a mini-show pairing sculptor Bob Dornberger and photographer Mike Slack, on view through November 11. The artists will be there for a meet and greet, along with copies of their books and a selection of books from Art Catalogues that reference or inform their point of view.
Lastly, this Friday treat yourself to a spectacular performance by Judy Wexler, described by Jazz Times as “one of the most focused, unpretentious, no-nonsense, bop-oriented jazz singers around" for Jazz at LACMA. Then on Sunday, October 28 at 6 pm, Sundays Live presents the American Youth Symphony AYS Principals Chamber Ensemble with Concertmaster Gallia Kastner. After learning about all these treats, make sure to plan your visit to LACMA, and maybe a dentist, today!
